The NBCPA work experience programme offers legal work placements for secondary school, college and university students.

The NBCPA work experience programme is for students interested in legal work experience, careers in law and working for the Crown Prosecution Service. We offer one week placements to give students first-hand experience of what it’s like to be a solicitor or barrister.

I had the opportunity to take part in the Crown Prosecution Service NBPCA work experience programme. During the week I had the pleasure to shadow numerous prosecutors across the Magistrates Court, Crown Court and Royal Courts of Justice, which not only entailed learning the strict guidelines and rules that must be met before a case can be brought for prosecution but also the formalities that come with court proceedings.

One of the highlights of my week was when I had the extreme privilege to have been sitting in the audience before the Rt Hon Lord Justice Judge Haddon-Cave at the Royal Courts of Justice; in which he presided over an appeal of a manslaughter and fraud case, which were later both dismissed and refused leave. I would like to thank NBPCA and the CPS for their hospitality and the organisation of this fantastic week.

The NBCPA work experience programme sits alongside the Crown Prosecution Service strategy and provides a route for people to access work experience in the Crown Prosecution Service. The programme is truly unique as it offers students the chance to get a taste of what it’s like to be a lawyer in the criminal justice system. A typical week will see students shadowing crown prosecutors to find out more about their roles and to get an insight into prosecution work, learning about the Code for Crown Prosecutors, being involved in case scenarios and mock trials as well as visiting the Crown Court, Magistrates Court and Central Criminal Court to see courts in session. Feedback from schools and students shows our work experience placement has played a vital part in helping to shape and influence future careers for students who would not otherwise be exposed to these opportunities.

How to apply?

Our work experience placement is available for students who are in year 11 and above. Our placements take place at any period throughout the year.
